Kailua Beach Honolulu, Hawaii- You're well overdue for that Hawaiian vacation, am I right? Kailue Beach has been voted one of the best beaches in the world. With its soft, pale sand and clear water, it's one of those beaches you'll never want to leave. It's also a great spot of windsurfing. If you're feeling saucy and want to try windsurfing for the first time, they have rental and instruction right there at the beach!

Canon Beach, Oregon Coast- The Oregon Coast is perfect for a mellow and romantic extra long weekend away. Canon Beach is nestled between lovely lush forest and wide open oceans. With miles of beach to comb, and quaint galleries and cafes to explore, Canon Beach is a perfect spot for two lovebirds. The Ocean Point Inn is the place to stay.

Provincetown Cape Cod- Don't be fooled by this isolated new England town. Provincetown has got a fantastic summer party scene. In the warmer months, the town fills up with young, artsy types ready to celebrate the season. Spend a day exploring the miles of Atlantic beach, then stop in to the Tea Dance at the Boatslip Resort. It's pretty wild- think flambouyant hats and spiked tea.

San Fransisco- Looking for a more metropolitan summer spot? San Francisco is a city with character! With its steep hills, charming Victorian homes and stunning bay views, San Francisco is a great place to escape some of the summer heat and still enjoy a vacation in the city. Drive across the Golden Gate Bridge into Sausalito for an afternoon, then return for dinner and out of this world dessert at Citizen Cake.

South Beach, Miami- Miami is another city vacation that will take you out of the norm. This ocean front city is a hub of beautiful people and great parties. The Hotel, on South Beach invented the hotel pool bar scene. Pop up to the pool top room for a drink or two. It's full of local South Beach flavor.

1. ROMANCE STAGE

All relationships begin with this stage. The need satisfied here is love and belonging. This stage i s characterised by its dream like qualities, fantasies, hopes for the future, the possibilities and the asking of "what if". Everything is wonderful, beautiful, fun and exciting.

2. POWER STRUGGLE STAGE

The need satisfied now is power and some freedom. There is an awareness now that you are different but the premise remains that differences are bad.

3. STABILITY STAGE

The need satisfied in this stage is freedom and choice. You are now aware of each others personal world instead of just your own and the difference is okay. It is finally clear you are not going to reshape your partner. Clear boundaries are determined.

4. COMMITMENT STAGE

This is the only stage where there really is a readiness for marriage though people usually have already married in the romance stage. That's unfortunate because when they reach the power struggle stage they wonder what hit them.

In this stage you are wide awake, making clear choices about yourself and your partner, based both on individual differences and those things you have in common.

5. CO-CREATION STAGE

In this stage you are two people who have decided to be a team moving out into the world. The equation is you + me =3D you + me + us within the world. This world may include children, a project, a church, a joint business venture, etc.

You move beyond the relationship. The danger at this stage is over involvement with the outside world and relationship being neglected. The relationship must be continually nurtured along the way. There needs to be time for you, for me, for us and for them. This is difficult sometimes and choices must be made.

Emma Donoghue steps outside of her comfort zone with Room, her new novel. The Irish-born novelist, who now makes her home in London, Ontario, is known primarily for her richly detailed historical fiction (such as 2000’s Slammerkin) and stories exploring lesbian relationships. Her latest effort is quite a departure, and it seems to be working: the book garnered a spot on the Man Booker Prize shortlist.

The plot bears resemblance to the horrific true events surrounding Austrian Josef Fritzl, who kept his daughter imprisoned in a soundproof bunker in his basement for 24 years, fathering seven children by her. Rather than having the imprisoned woman tell her story, Donoghue places the narrative in the hands of a child born into a 12’ x 12’ room, the only home he’s ever known.

As a narrator, five-year-old Jack is tremendously enticing. His mother, kidnapped seven years earlier while walking through her college campus at age 19, has created a world for her son that is rich in play and learning, all the while anticipating the day they might make their “great escape.” This environment has provided Jack with an impressive vocabulary, though his advanced learning is juxtaposed with the natural innocence and bewilderment of a small child. The result is a story told through a child’s eyes, but in language that is endearing rather than tiresome.

The pace and plot of the story are both pitch perfect, though after the climax midway through the book, the reader may wonder what could be left to say. A great deal, it turns out, as Jack faces a whole new world of unfamiliarity and fear. Earnest and bright, he is remarkably adaptable, and provides commentary that is lushly intricate.

The character of Ma, while not the main voice, is nevertheless whole. Donoghue employs Jack’s descriptions of her moods, conversations, and thoughts to paint a picture of a woman struggling to keep it together for the sake of her child, while also fighting to become the person she once was and might be again, if circumstances allow.

Her cookbook, released this week, is an ode to family cooking, so you know we’ve got to be all over it. My Father’s Daughter (Grand Central Publishing) is a gorgeous book with recipes that range from simple breakfast ideas to more elaborate meals you’d make for a dinner party. We can’t wait to try her dad’s pancake recipe!

In recent years, Croatia has become a popular European destination for sun-worshippers, back-packers, and adventure junkies alike. I enjoy travelling, and Croatia is one of my favourite places to visit.
Despite the hype, Croatia’s pleasures are more timeless than trendy. Along its 1778km coastline, a glistening sea winds around rocky coves, lapping at pine-fringed beaches. Istrian ports bustle with fishermen while children dive into the sparkling water. In Dalmatia, cities throb with nightlife amid ancient Roman ruins.
You’ll find a strong central European flavour in the baroque architecture of Zagreb, and Italian devotion to the good life percolates up from the coast, permeating Croatian food and style. During holidays and festivals the country’s Slavic soul emerges, as colourfully costumed dancers whirl about to traditional folk melodies.

Croatians retain a strong attachment to the land and traditions that nourished the dream of independence for so long. Even as a tide of speculators and developers wash ashore, there is a real commitment to preserving the extraordinary beauty of the coast. Whether the country can hold out against the lure of easy money is an excruciating test of its character.
